Scientists developing women's Viagra

A new drug is being tested in the US which researchers claim could do for women's sex drives what Viagra did for men's. An inhaler is being developed which could stimulate that part of women's brains to do with sex.

New York women have reputation of being sexually confident. But many women admit to days when they are not interested in sex. Now researchers in nearby New Jersey claim to have developed a drug which has been dubbed the female viagra.

Scientists at "Palatin Technologies" are developing a nasal inhaler for women called Bremelanotide, which they say stimulates the part of the brain connected with sex drive.

Annette Shadiack from Palatin Technologies says the area of the brain necessary for sexual arousal is found in the hypothalamus area of the brain, and what Bremelanotide does is bind to receptors in the hypothalamus, and initiate the sexual arousal.

By directly stimulating the hypothalamus, the drug increases blood flow to the female genital area, which in turn increases their sex drive. Researchers say it works within 30 minutes of taking a dose, and lasts for about an hour.

Being tested

Some women say they are looking forward to the new prescription drug. One of them is Katie McGarry, who says the drug could really help with relationship problems where partners have loss their sex drive.

However Alexa Decroix disagrees, saying that women are better off without libido enhancers. Scientists say the drug will not make a woman suddenly fall in love, but rather acts as a stimulant.

The drug is currently being tested on rats. In one trial a cage is specially designed with a hole that only the female rat can fit through, so it is easy for her to escape the male altogether. This means it's up to the female to dictate when sexual contact occurs.

She solicits the male by exposing her genitalia then running away. He chases her, and they have intercourse. Researchers say the female rats solicit sex three times as often, when dosed with Bremelanotide, but only when they were receptive to sex already.

If they were not receptive to sex their behaviour remains unchanged. Palatin says it will seek FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approval once clinical trials are done, and hope to have the drug on the market by 2010.
